Groups are a great way to find and share good music with like-minded people. Groups share a common page, similar to a listener page, where members can all post messages to a central place, with a radio of its own that is based on the activities of the group members, including hearting, saving and tagging songs.
Joining a group is a requirement of the ( quest name needed ) quest, and there are quests (eg. Community Playlist) that require membership in a group to complete.
Some groups are open for anyone to join, as indicated by the presence of the “join group” button on the right sidebar. Other groups require authorization by a group administrator to join. These groups instead have an “apply to group” button.
Typically, these latter groups will have admittance requirements described in the “about” section in the right sidebar. Before applying to one of these groups, check that you meet the requirements, listen to the group's radio to ensure your musical taste will be a good “fit” with the group, and contact a group administrator via their listener page (where possible) to put a more “human touch” on your group application.
Technically, joining a group unlocks the ability for you to post messages on the group “wall”, and comment on the listener pages of all group members (even if they have “block messages from strangers” checked in their user preferences). In addition, your activity with hearting, saving, tagging, and commenting on songs will now influence the list of songs on the group's front page, and thereby the group's radio.
To get the most out of group membership, pay attention to the posts on the group's page (often referred to as “the wall”) to see what kind of activities are part of the group culture. Typically, new members of a group are greeted with comments on their listener page, ”radio bumps”, hearts on their featured songs, or whatever a group deems customary. Some groups celebrate their members' birthdays in a similar fashion. Many groups also have regular “events”, and activities that harness the power of a co-ordinated group effort for such things as helping a listener reach an achievement level, promoting a song to the home page, or simply raising a deserving artist out of obscurity.
