Glossary

A place to find all those tricky definitions of commonly used terms and acronyms from listeners and artists at thesixtyone.

List of commonly used terms and acronyms and their definitions.

A

Achievement

A tracking system for goals based on cumulative actions such as listening to tracks, hearting songs, and completing quests. Arranged in levels based on thresholds. Reputation points are awarded for attaining achievement levels. Current user levels are viewable under the achievements tab of stats & achievements link on a user page. See achievements article for more details.


Admin (Group)

A listener account with the power to add/remove users from a group, change the “about” information for the group, the avatar, and perform other group-related administrative duties. See the right sidebar of a group page for a list of the current admins.

Album

A collection of songs from an artist, grouped together for the purposes of single-purchasing or downloading, shared cover art, and general aesthetics.

Artist

A user account with the ability to upload songs. See artists section for more details.

Auto-Repeat

Function in the player app which causes the currently playing song to be looped until it is toggled off. Particularly relevant to The Earworm quest.

Creative Commons

A non-profit organization that issues and maintains copyright licensing agreements, best known for their innovative declaration of various levels of “some rights reserved”, allowing legal sharing, use, repurposing, and remixing. Songs on thesixtyone with CC licenses can be found be selecting the “creative commons” option under the “popular” pulldown. See the Creative Commons Website for further details.

Creator (Group)

Uh, the person who creates a group. Go figure.

Credit

Cash equivalent on thesixtyone. Can be purchased via credit card or paypal at a rate of 80 credits per $USD, and used to buy songs, albums, and tip artists.

Discover

To be the first person to heart a song. Alternatives: First Heart, First Bump; Acronyms: FB, FH

Download

A link on some song's infoboxes telling you you can download an MP3 of the song, which depending on the artists wishes will be either free (but low quality, 128 kbps), or paid (higher quality). If the artist sells entire albums, clicking download on any song in the album will also tell you the album price. Some artists sell only by the album, in which case single track download is grayed out. To buy tracks or albums you need credits. Common prices are 80 credits per track, 400 credits per album.

Earworm

One of the quests: see here. Also used to describe a track highly suitable for multiple subsequent listens.

Feature

To click the “feature” link under a song name resulting in it being added to the top of your profile page. You can have up to 3 songs “featured” at one time. Adding a new feature when you already have 3 removes the current bottom song from the list, moves the other two down a slot, and prepends the new track at the top.

First Blood

See Discover. Also a sound effect from the game Unreal Tournament that is used when you discover a song.

Genre

A list of tracks in related music styles.

Group

H

Heart

One (1) unit of respect. You are given a certain number of hearts per day to spend on songs you like. Hearting a song earns you reputation in return.

Holy Shit

The sound that is played when you max heart a song. Originally from Unreal Tournament 2003.

Homepage

Where popular songs are posted daily. Popularity is a result of hearts and listens.

Listen

a) verb: to pay attention to sound
b) noun: on thesixtyone, an instance of playing a song, tracked as a primary listener account statistic, according to the algorithm described in the listens article. Required for many quests and achievements.
c) Stat related to a listener, visible on the left sidebar of a listener page. It refers to the number of times your radio has been played.
Synonym: play

Listener

a) Type of account on thesixtyone that allows you to earn and spend hearts, participate in quests, belong to a group, etc. As differentiated from an artist account. See listeners section for more details.
b) Stat related to an artist, visible on the left sidebar of an artist page. It refers to the number of listener accounts that have at least one song from that artist saved and/or featured.

Legacy term for Max Heart, left over from the previous recognition system in thesixtyone that used bumps instead of hearts.

Listed on the left sidebar of a listener account, refers to the current number of listens achieved by that user.

Rack, The

From the t61 FAQ: The Rack is a radio category that features a random mix of under-the-radar music and automatically filters what you listen to based on the genre you've selected on the homepage. You can earn extra hearts and reputation for listening to songs on The Rack.

Radio

A listener's radio is a shuffled playlist comprised of the songs a listener has saved or featured. A group's radio is a similar playlist which is comprised of all the songs listed on the group wall, as determined by the group members' hearts/saves/features. See the writeup on radio for more details.

Radio Bump

Increasing a listeners radio count by one or more. Acronym: RB

Repeat

A feature of the embedded music player that, when toggled on, continuously loops the current track. Mainly used for The Earworm quest.

Reputation

The system of points on thesixtyone that users can earn and spend in various ways, and which determine the user's level. See the writeup on reputation for details.

Revive

To cause a song to be reposted on the homepage by bidding reputation points in a silent auction system. See the writeup on revives for details.

Roll Over

The point in time where a “new day” begins on thesixtyone. It is 12AM PST. This is when daily hearts and quests are awarded/assigned. See roll_over for details.

Rookie

A listener account created within the last two weeks. Rookies are listed by descending order of reputation/level on the first tab of the leaderboards. After two weeks have passed, the listener account will be removed from the rookie leaderboard.

Subgenre

Optional element of meta-data that can be specified for a song by the uploading artist. Shows up on the rack, and on songs listed via search.
